On My Bookshelf

Though my to-read list is constantly changing, there are a few authors and books that maintain prominent spots on my top shelf of favorites. The following (which are in no particular order) have my permanent seal of approval, and I strongly urge you to read them.

  • Margaret Atwood: all of her works, but my favorites include Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Dennis Lehane: Gone Baby Gone (the two sequels to this novel are currently on my “To-Read” shelf)
  • Joseph Heller: Catch-22
  • Ian McEwan: Atonement, Amsterdam, Saturday
  • JK Rowling: Harry Potter (I love all seven, I can’t even begin to say which was my favorite.)
  • Michael Ondaatje: The English Patient
  • Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go
  • David Sedaris
  • J.R.R. Tolkien: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  • Ernest Hemingway: Garden of Eden
  • Alexandre Dumas: The Count of Monte Cristo
  • Bill Bryson

Classic authors I will always adore include:

  • Geoffrey Chaucer
  • William Shakespeare
  • John Milton
  • Edmund Spenser

Of course, you must keep in mind that I discover new favorites on a regular basis, and my library continues to grow at a somewhat alarming rate. If I could read a new book every week, I would without question. But some books are like best friends, no matter how well you know them, you are always happy to spend time with them.
